Jeep Wrangler Towing Capacity - Not as Much as you Think!

It's a common misconception that the Jeep Wrangler is capable of some big numbers as far as towing capacity is concerned.

Unfortunately, that isn't the case. So this brings up the question...

How Much can a Jeep Wrangler Tow?

The range of towing capacities for the Jeep Wrangler is 2,000 - 3,500 lbs.

As you can probably notice, 2 doors are limited to 2,000 pounds whereas the 4 door Unlimited Wranglers have a higher capacity of 3,500 lbs.

This difference is mainly attributed to the longer wheelbase of the 4 Door Unlimited.

Wranglers can't compete with full-size pick-up trucks that boast towing capacities into the 5 figure range.

If you're looking for a Jeep that can safely tow more than 3,500 lbs, you need to look at the Jeep Gladiator which has a much more impressive maximum towing capacity of 7650 lbs for the Sport S model..

Why is the Jeep Wrangler Towing Capacity so Low?

There are many factors that contribute to how much a vehicle can tow including but not limited to:

  • Wheelbase length
  • Brakes
  • Suspension
  • Engine Cooling

Examples of Weights You Can Safely Tow

  • Can-Am Maverick Side-by-Side = 1,390 lbs (dry weight)
  • Jet-Ski / Sea-Doo = 400 - 1,000 lbs
    • Trailer = 250 - 400 lbs
  • Small Bass Boat + Trailer Dry Weight = 2,400 lbs

Remember that dry weight means no fuel or extra equipment.

Don't forget to take into account the weight of your trailer which needs to be included in your weight calculation!
